learned today that dorner sent me a package to my office here in cnn in new york. the package arrived on february 1st. i receive a lot of strange packages and letters and we have a system in place for dealing with them. i did not personally see this package or know about it until today. the package contained a dvd and a bullet-riddled keepsake coin called the challenge coin. it's nomhis former boss, william bradden, who joins me shortly to talk about it. that coin had three bullet holes in the center, as you can see. and one partial hole on its edge, on the upper right-hand corner of the coin. we're going to show you more of the contents of that package in a moment. in addition, we're going to talk to a veteran crime reporter about ways of stopping a revenge killer, and chris lawrence on the type of sniper training the suspect has. but we begin with randi kaye. >> we're under attack. that was the word from one california police lieutenant after at least three officers were shot early thursday morning. one officer died. police say the shooter is this man, 33-year-old christopher jordan

. >> this video obtained exclusively by cnn shows dorner just 12 hours after the irvine killings, apparently placing a military belt, a helmet and ammunition behind an auto parts store in san diego. >> of course he knows what he's doing, we trained him. he was also a member of the armed forces. it is extremely worrisome and scary, especially to the police officers involved. >> hours after that press conference with southern california police on high alert, at 10:30 p.m., dorner slipped into this san diego marina, boarded a boat and surprised its owner. >> he pointed a handgun at the victim who was an 81-year-old male and demanded the boat. >> dorner told the man he wanted to flee to mexico. >> the suspect then attempted to start the boat. >> but a rope became caught in the boat's propeller, delaying dorner's escape. >> at that point the suspect became frustrated, took a few small items, including cell phone and some other miscellaneous items from inside the boat, tied the victim up and left in an unknown direction. >> he didn't harm the 81-year-old man, why? i think because he wasn't a cop.
in the bunker and another in a pvc pipe. cnn's learned explosives weren't the only unstable variable law enforcement had to deal with. there was dykes' state of mind. neighbors describe the 65-year-old as a paranoid anti-government loner, fixated on a conspiracy involving horse racing. >> he used to keep notebooks of horse races. he always said that the mafia run the horse races. >> reporter: sources close to the case say while talking to police from the bunker a contentious dykes would ramble on about his theory and wanted to get his message out. >> mr. dykes, he feels like he has a story that's important to him, although it's very complex. >> reporter: in the early hours of the standoff local authorities even contemplated sending in a local reporter to talk to dykes. >> i knew the school bus driver had been shot. >> reporter: local blogger ricky stokes was the first reporter on the scene, capturing this video. he says authorities approached him with the idea. >> and you were willing to go along with that? >> anything they needed me to do, if it meant me showing him how to use the equip
